This legacy page from our © 1998 website is kept for historic curiosity.
This is a comprehensive evaluation of all the most popular search
engines based on personal experience trying to find pages we value
and maintain.
Great! The best! This search engine is very
smart and responsive. The add URL code has
nearly instantaneous turn around, and a search
for "java shell"
brings up a detailed description of
Turon Technologies second on the list!
This site has been the fastest and most comprehensive
keyword search engine for some time now. I was both
surprised and honored see Turon Technologies show up
second on the list of a "java shell" search.
This search engine is based on the advanced Inktomi
spider invented at my beloved UC Berkeley by the
NOW (Network of Workstations) project. As much
as I like the underlying architecture however, the
code that adds URLs is a bit quirky, and insists
on only linking to Turon Technologies as a hard
IP address. A search for "java shell" brings up
TTech in slot 6.
The default AOL search is good, but lacks any
description beyond the title of sites it finds.
Turon Technologies shows up in slot 11 of the
"java shell" search.
This one used to be my favorite above even infoseek
because it was the first to include phrase matching
intelligence to the standard brute force keyword
search. Finding Turon Technologies with Excite
proves to be a bit harder than with any other engine
however. A specific search such as
"turon zaBava shell" brings up
turon.com with a certainty of 81%, and a general search
for "java shell" does not find Turon Technologies anywhere
in the first 15 pages of results.
Decent search, but you've gotta wonder when a search
as specific as "turon zaBava shell" does not find
Turon Technologies anywhere in the first 15 pages
of results...
This search engine always seems to stand out for
one simple reason - all its links are maintained
by a team of *human* librarians who make sure only
the most vital and current pages are listed.
